The Bettie Stivender Nature Camp Scholarship Memorial Fund was established by the Council in 1994 in memory of Bettie who suggested a Nature Camp scholarship be given to a deserving young person to help further his/her education in science and the environment. Qualifications for receipt of the scholarship included excellence in the study of science and overall good marks in shool. One scholarship per year was given in the early seventies. As more and more interest grew, garden clubs an individual contributions made it possible to provide a greater number of scholarships each year. In 2002, ten scholarships were awarded.
Nature Camp scholarship winners were recognized at the annual Arbor Day celebration.
Bettie was a charter member of the Skipwith Farms Garden Club, a former Council president, a member of the Tidewater District and the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs’ Boards of Directors, and a National Garden Club Master Judge. She excelled in arranging flowers for her garden club and church and gave many programs and demonstrations in our area as well as throughout Virginia. Because of her enthusiasm and continued efforts to promote Nature Camp scholarships, this fund was established.
As of 2007, operation and ownership of Nature Camp was purchased by Nature Camp Acquisitions, Inc. The Council no longer offers Nature Camp scholarships but it encourages member garden clubs to continue to do so.
